Default New game idea

I got this idea for a game reading the other threads. Not sure if it's been suggested before, or maybe even done before, but here it is.

Colonize only own type, and only own atmosphere, AND the Game owner would restrict the players to one of each combination.

Normally the only own type and only own atmosphere games are pretty slim pickings because everybody ends up fighting for the same planets. This way everybody's planet type would be incompatible. You would end up sharing lots of systems, so when the wars started it would be realy hairy because there would be very few definable borders. Also capturing planets would be absolutly critical as you would not be able to turn around and colonize that planet on your own after glassing it.

You could have up to 14 players in a game like this. You could do it with less, but it would be more fun I think with the full amount. You'd also prolly have to make it a 5 or at least a 3 planet start, as things would be pretty slow getting off the blocks otherwise.

I know it has been pretty much proven that there are slight variations in the number of planets from one combo to another. I can't remember which it is, but one of them would have a slight numerical advantage. But this advantage is very slight, and it only matters really once you get to where you are spread out over the entire quadrant. The randomness of individual systems means that even if you have an numerical advantage quadrant wise of your planetary choice, they may be where you can't get them because of other empires in your way. And vice versa.

Comments?

there is alot of those issues in a colonize-only-own-type games. especially in larger games, 3 way alliances tend to develop between ice-rock-gas dwellers. then the alliances tend to face off against each other.

with only own type and only own atmosphere, you would probably get more of a free-for-all. you could run a 5 player game with the same effect if you just use the colonize own atmosphere option..

some people would have planets that very few and far between, im just guessing, but im thinking maybe one good planet per 3 systems. i guess a good way to find out would be to start a game with ancient race on, and see how many green *s you get.

Ok, I like this better than my idea. I prefer smaller games, and getting five players should not be that difficult. But would this unduly penalize the None race? The other four could develop and utilize all three colony types, but the none guys would be limited to just the Rock and Ice because of their atmosphere. Of course they would have moons everywhere. I guess it's the same old argument all over again.

I don't know if anyone did a statisitcal breakdown of average facility spots assuming a "breath only own atmosphere type" game.

Oh, I think the bonus gained from 5 facilities on every moon for the none'rs more than make up for missing out on the gas planets. For one thing because the gas planets will be roughly divided four ways.

This gives me an idea for a system based mod. Redo the system and quadrant types to make type or atmosphere specific systems.

Sounds cool. Just for added effect, play the game under proportions.

Yeah, and if we get started right away, I might live to see the end of it.
