Extreme Game Programming!
So, do you want to see some really original games? Drop in on the annual 'Ludum Dare' competition. Slashdot is carrying a story about it. You sit down at a computer and design a game from scratch in one weekend -- whether you sleep or not is your choice... ONE person must do everything, programming, graphics, and any 'content' (background story, culture, etc.) and the final products are judged for quality.
http://developers.slashdot.org/artic...id=127&tid=186
"The 4th Ludum Dare game competition is being held over the April 16-18 weekend. A forum discussion can be found here, and you may register your details here. Previous compos have spawned some interesting games, as well as provided a unique insight into the creative process of the programmer mind."

Re: Extreme Game Programming!
Hmmm, maybe we could get Aaron involved? He could do SE5 in a weekend, right?

What about Taz's old Bar game? He did that in one day, right?

Re: Extreme Game Programming!
How do you create an entire game in one weekend? I thought it takes months of work. Maybe if you already have an idea and have it all planned out before you go to the competition, and then when you're there you just type out your code as fast as you can? Even then it sounds very difficult! And debugging is a lot of work, too so you have to leave time for that.

It all depends on how advanced you want it.
I could make a snake game in a couple of minutes.
Improve it with graphics, sounds, game history and scenarios, maps, enemies, weapons, bonuses, history, scenario editor, hiscore list, netplay, savegames, options, etc ..... and you could keep at it for many months and end up with something completely different.
Have you seen junkyard wars on discovery channel? Make a submarine or an airplane in 10 hours from scrap, it's amazing, and fun!!!

Re: Extreme Game Programming!
And if the game is good enough, your work will be stolen by one of the big three and exploited to no end.
Now thanks.
