Ouch.

My don't get hurt is always max range.

Now if I could get the ships to attack as quickly as they run on the don't get hurt mode.

"Don't get hurt" means "Get as far away from the enemy as possible, as quickly as possible". It will fire on a ship if the ships gets in range. But when one side is jukeing in and out of firing range, and the other side is climbing the corner like a lobster trying to get out of an aquarium, well, it's easy to see which side is going to land the most shots.

Default Damned artificial idiot!

Just lost another 3 of MY ships to the AI by the AI. Is it even fighting on my side?!? Lesson learnt here: don't give a fleet the "don't get hurt" order, the ships will really run like the end of the world without any order. I emphasis the Last three words - "without any order" - it managed to leave behind a ship for the "other side" of the computer to shoot up while "MY" (supposingly) other ships, the really powerful ships, ran for ANOTHER corner! I believe I told them to "don't get hurt" not "don't defend"!!

I suggsted this a whil back, can't remmeber if it was feasible or not...

Could you mod the components so that hulls had a weapon ability, huge range (20 squares or something like that), 1 damage at all ranges. Then, instead of giving the "don't get hurt" order to unarmed ships, tell them "max weapons range". Then they will stay at the maximum range of their hull weapon instead of running for the corners. Might be more effctive.

WOuld this work?

I learned this one the hard way: If you told them to attack the planet and they got beat up doing it but they are still there, they still have the order to attack in their command queue. When you tell them to leave, they think they have to attack the planet first. You have to clear their existing commands before you tell them to leave.

And no, I didn't learn this by watching a lone carrier that had lost all of its fighters, repeatedly attack a planet, then sit in the corner since it couldn't actually do anything.

Hmm, I rather like an AI that does what I tell it to, and continues to try until I cancel the order. At least one other game comes to mind where the AI is quite happy to disregard player orders and do what it thinks is best, leaving the player to cry, "No, you idiot, don't turn away! Follow my order! Don't you remember that there's an enemy panz-- I mean enemy 'starship' over there?!"

Not quite... the ships were there originally to do a recon on the planet with a "don't get hurt" order, and you guys already know what happened from my first post in this thread (the ships ran to different corners, a few got killed). The next turn I changed the order to "maximum range" and tried to get them out, but the AI obviously thought it could have a go at the planet and win... how dumb!

Well actually, I think I DID give them an attack order to get them in in the first place... still, the AI's fault!!

Well, I don't want to offend you but the AI only did what you ordered.
As it entered with the "don't get hurt" it ran for cover as it should. Then you changed order to attack from maximum distance and they did attack the planet from maximum distance. There is nothing wrong with the AI, just bad orders.
