ability combo
I was thinking that a good thug/sc combo would be an awe/fear heavy unit, like a virtue with 10 dominion, that awe giving armor and a horror helmet. Im a pretty new player, so is awe/fear a good combo?

Re: ability combo
Awe/fear its quite good!
Try a blue dragon (with some more water magic for better defence), cyclop (with earth for more protection) or gorgon with 10 dominions. Awe 2, fear and wether a good defence or protection is a very good combo! Try to prevent attacking undead and other high morale troops. Crossbows are a pain too.
You can also try any other pretender and give him dominions 10 for awe 2 and at least death 5 for fear(+0).

Re: ability combo
Dominion 10 Wyrm is nice. Fear, awe and regeneration from turn 1. Needs no items or magic, though they can help obviously.

Re: ability combo
I suppose you didn't mention Dominion10 Prince of Death, because it was too obvious ?

Re: ability combo
Take a dom10, d9n2 dormant PoD. He has fear+19, awe+2 and by the time he comes out should be able to cast personal regeneration.

Re: ability combo
Dormant vs awake on an expander-type pretender really depends on the map size. If there are only a few provinces per player, dormant will be waking up just as he stops being useful. If the map is spacious, and your national troops are decent, it can save you a lot of points.

Re: ability combo
The thing is, even with his fear+awe i find the PoD, without spells or armour, too fragile vrs most indies.

Re: ability combo
Yes, I meet just that PoD without equipment in a game recently and he was allmost killed by my PD. He was lucky he ran away before he died.

Re: ability combo
upstreamedge's original idea of a Dom 10 Virtue is also very strong against things that respond to Awe... Of course, unlike a PoD, Virtues get tired when fighting for a very long time, unless they have magic to counter that.

Re: ability combo
Just did a game with a Prince of Death pretender with D6F3N3 (the fire and nature are more to get access to magic not available to my nation (late atlantis), and +3 attack from fire doesn't hurt, but D6 would have been enought)
Important : dominion 10
Equip him with :
- any one handed weapon
- black tower shield (const 0 E1)
- black helmet (const 0 E1) and as soon as you can a horror helmet (D2) to improve its fear
- black steel armor (cont 0 E2)
Of course if you have access to astral add the usual lucky pendant
This is not an invincible SC, but with this, he will have enought fear to drop the morale of opponents to negative values, meaning that the awe aura (+2 total from starting dominion 10) will prevent almost all attacks, and for arrow/crossbow bolts, or the lucky hit that passed the awe and you defence, the armor and tower shield will protect you.
And of course try to fight in your own dominion, to maximise your bonuses, the extra hit points by themselves will prevent a lucky hit from a strong opponent, or a spell (smite, lightning, ...) to kill you in one shoot.
And later as your construction level increase, you can finish to equip your PoD with all the classic (boots of quickness, etc ...)
Important : give him orders to *attack*, not cast spell : attacking will not fatigue him (undead), that's why you can give him such a heavy armor, but casting will do (and fast), and fatigue means lower defense, and higher chance of critical strike (armor / 2)
Edit : fixed some typos
