Point of Defense is it.
Some put one of two per ship and others build ships with mostly PoD cannons on them.
If you do the second, build them with one regular weapon a beam or something,...

I like the flee option, but it needs some work. Otherwise, it is only another advantage for the human player, in that he will never choose to fight a battle he cannot win. Maybe only have it kick in...

I'm not a big fan of AI bonuses, so I've played one game with every attribute set as low as it can go and without any advanced cultural traits.
Only went through 50 turns, and out of 7 or 8...

If I remember correctly in Caesar 2, the AI armies had morale as well, but I am pretty sure it was reset with every new battle that took place, which was not so for the player. That's not a realistic...
