Re: Satelittes and Weapon Platforms Designs
Never use either of them. For vunerable planets I use a combo of mines (in space), fighters, and starbases.
A nice option would be to add a feature where one can predetermine the location of starbases, satellites, etc...upon their construction completion. Location would be permanent. It would make for some interesting strategy in planetary defense.
Of course as icing a .txt file could be added, much like the formation file, so we could mod them for the AI.
Imagine having tactical combat open and your ships are mixed up in a field of satellites. Would make planetary defense much more fun. There would be a limit of spaces you could occupy though...say 20-25.
An orbit to satellites would be fun too. Have them automatically move 1, 2 or 3 spaces around a planet.
Just stupid ideas. Take em or leave em.

Re: Satelittes and Weapon Platforms Designs
I like the orbiting idea. I think that would not only make things more interesting but would also alivate the problem of combat starting and all your sats being launched on the opposite side of the planet and never end up in range. Kind of useless that way.

They aren't stupid ideas. Someone posted a week or so ago that sats should appear scattered defensively around a planet, and not stacked as they actually do. In fact, i think that a .txt like the one you say is a very interesting and logic idea.
I use sats with seekers and PDCs. They are cheap, doesn'nt need maintenance and my little experience shows that they can be an excellent aid in defensive purposes (In my style of playing, of course).

Exactly. I've given sats an intrinsic 'to hit' bonus just like fighters, first of all. Not as much, though. Only 20 percent. Then, there are mounts for medium and large sats that give range and 'to hit' bonuses.

Re: Satelittes and Weapon Platforms Designs
The are several mods in the mod archive that change weapon mounts for weapon platforms and other vehicles. I changed weapon platform mounts and gave them the same range bonus as base mounts. I didnt give the accuracy bonus though - to simulate firing through an atmosphere.
Check out Mod1 if your interested.

Re: Satelittes and Weapon Platforms Designs
If you are interested in more 'mounts' for satt's/weapon platforms and ships. (as well as for components) you could also check out my modd, its on the PBW site in the files download section, 'Deathstalkers Mount Mod'. It has (IMO) some good stuff!
