I use an app instead of Windows Explorer called: Explorer XP {company link} (http://www.explorerxp.com) It offers some robust renaming options. Or you could try to find some freeware renaming app.

I played GalCiv back in the days of OS/2, and I never questioned the physics of open map, these are games after all.
