WHY are Dreadnoughts limited to 4 engines?!

Because they're huge

You can change it yourself if you like. Just go to the Data folder, open up shipsizes.txt, scroll down the the Dreadnaught, and up the max number of engines.

DNs and baseships are limited in engines just to make them move slower than the smaller ships.

If you want to see a more realistic propulsion system, try P&N v2!

No engine limits (well, a limit of 40 to prevent range check errors), and the speed of a ship is proportional to engine thrust divided by mass.

check out the readme, its actually pretty cool. hull sizes can have a 'engines required per move' setting, in the basic game it defaults to 1. the mod basically figures it based on the maximum load a hull can carry, so if you leave a lot of empty space on a ship it will treat it just like a full one.
