The HQ Unit Class is also a form of artillery observer - so changing the A0 from that loses you the artillery spotter abilities.
Vehicles are also more easily spotted, and so more vulnerable. The 6 man infantry unit default at least has a chance of surviving a hit or 2. And making the CIC a scout helo is inviting disaster! ...

.
In a LC, if you lose the command unit, the campaign is
over (other than PBEM LCs - a special case). It represents
you.
Losing the A0 is a major morale hit to your forces, and also it represents the rear-link in comms so calling off-map units may be more difficult if it's routed or dead. (More chance of off-map elements being out of communications).
The HQ unit (whatever you change it to should you do so) is really supposed to be left to the rear, out of danger and not unduly risked. It is almost like the King in chess.
So it is best left to the rear, away from any other unit that may draw fires (e.g arty or AAA), perhaps on a hill top to act as another arty spotter. Its arty skill level will increase over the campaign, the more times you use it as a spotter to call in fires.
