Re: OT: What Is?
They're required services.
When you Ctrl+alt+delete it should mention something more under username, but mostly it just says "system".
There was one place I could see what each was for but I've forgotten where now...
Somewhere in admin tools I think in the control panel..must check..
Edit:
Here is all you need to know:
http://support.microsoft.com/default...NoWebContent=1
Edit2:
To see what each "svchost" is start a dos window and type :
tasklist /svc
Edit3:
Svchost.exe should only be located in your system32 directory under the windows main directory, if it's not you should be able to safely delete it.

Re: OT: What Is?
Various viruses like to infect svchost.exe. If you see a lot of those proceses and notice significant decrese of your PC performance, you might have got a worm. I recently had one named W32.HLLW.Gfaobot.DK. It exploits some windows vulnerabilities while spreading in LAN and sends lots of spam, which causes internet connection to lag.

Usually they don't "infect" svchost.
They make a new executable somewhere else and starts that.
See the second link in my previous post.

Re: OT: What Is?
Thanks for the info Renegade. I have to agree, one case in all of the US is quite remarkable. Feeding cows cow, well that is just sick, but I guess the people doing it know more about it than I do, so it must be ok.
