Re: Got a possibly noobish question
Always believed the Spaceports worked as Teletransportation devices, or some kind of Stargate for resources only!
Too bad they doesn't work with ships...
More interesting, in my view, are these races that doesn't need the Spaceports!

Re: Got a possibly noobish question
Ooohh... like MB's take on Spaceports....
So much more makes sense now.
Maybe those other races still need the hardware, but can just build it much, much smaller, so it doens't take a whole Facility. In fact, they can had one (or more) on every planet.

Re: Got a possibly noobish question
In any game format one may choose to what degree reality is represented, and computer games in particular have a large amount of freedom in this respect. There are many choices to be made when designing a game...too simple and the game becomes uninteresting, too complex and it becomes unplayable. The trick, it seems, is to find the best trade-off.

Re: Got a possibly noobish question
nah... Spaceports are a representation of a large investment in economic infrastructure, much like a much grander Version of the port of Charleston, Shanghai, etc...probably involving things like space elevators, lots of ship to space shuttles, and the associated facilities for quarantining, money exchange, and transport of people/things...and I say that becuase those races that are "natural merchants" are so good at trading that they don't need the investment to create such an infrastructure. They just do it on a micro-scale.

I always got around the suspension of disbelief about TL communication by assuming that all ships sent back Messages in very small (hence super-fast) courier drones that are pre-programmed to go to the next relay station, where another courier drone awaits. Sort of like the Fires of Whosawhatsis in Gondor in the Return of the King that called upon the Men of Rohan, or the pony express, or 18-19th century telegraphs along the coasts to warn of invasions...
I'll shut up now.

Re: Got a possibly noobish question
All you really need are relays at the warppoints.
Even at light-speed, that's only half a day per system, or about an hour per sector.
Given that turns are a month long, there's no problem dishing out orders and seeing results in a simultaneous game.

But must say that it was joke Alarikf! A bad one but a joke anyway!
Really don't have an opinion about what are (or should be) the Spaceports in terms of CF!
Think they're a very good element to add some twists into the Game without add so much micromanagement, and this is enough to me.
Anyway, I liked your theory.

Oops. Clearly I am lacking a sense of humour. Sorry!

Re: Got a possibly noobish question
What ever happened to "sub-space radio?" (like they had in the original Star Trek)

Re: Got a possibly noobish question
Bah! We should be so lucky. If you can send energy in the form of "sub-space radio" at FTL speeds, then you can make FTL weapons, and probably FTl ships too...although it would be neat to be able to bLast your enemy's planets from three systems away...
