SOYO Hardware Monitor_tm:

Temperatures: Chassis=88F, CPU=112F
Fan Speed = 2680rpm
Voltages: VCore=1.47v, +12V=12.09v, +3.3V=3.31v, +5V=5.1v, AGP=1.5v, DRAM=2.44v

Seems peachy.

On a side note (sorry Turin!) what is a safe range for CPU and hard drive temperatures?

I've had similar problems with 98 and the only way I could fix it was to reformat and reinstall.

This depends on the CPU. Most AMD CPUs are rated for pretty high temperatures. 90 Celcius or so (about 190 Fahrenheit!) But people try to keep them much lower out of simple prudence. Running an AMD Athlon at 40 to 50 Celcius is considered 'ok' in most power user circles.

I don't know if any hard drives are equipped with temperature sensors. They definitely can overheat, but I don't think it's an urgent enough issue to be followed like CPU temperature is.

Well, without looking, my first reaction is to say to update BIOS, then all lower level drivers. (video, anything on the motherboard)
Other than that, I'd say get rid of WinMe. WinXP is much nicer. Heck, even Win2k is better than WinMe.

I had a simular thing happen to my blue box 2k machine. I called in one of the two customer service things you get with windows (2 free tech support help calls and then you pay).

They helped me to reload a previous good load of the system and all was fine until the HD Failed.

Bite your tongue, young man.

I can't believe no one's got a way to decode these errors.

I've fixed some pretty fubared systems before, but I can't do it over a bulletin board or even IM chat program. Nothing beats being physically at the machine for debugging and such.
Sorry

Well hard drive temperatures can be urgent... Where I live, in the summer it's always dusty. My hard drive is equipped with a temperature sensor, and one day when I checked it, it said the hard drive had a temperature of over 200 degree Fahrenheit! Cleaned out the fan system of the half-inch of dust that was coating everything, checked again after allowing time to cool, and the temperature dropped to 76F. I'm betting that if the hard drive was running at over 200 degrees for very long, it could have easily resulted in a failure.
