Most of the time you won't expierience any major problems; hardly any minor problems at that. In order to upgrade a game in progress on PBW is to ask Geo or one of the other admins at PBW to change the game to the new patch. At which point all players will need to have the corrisponding patch in order to continue. I've gone through 2 patches on PBW in many games and I have never seen any problems come up.
