The only way I have found currently to deal with this is to do tactical simulation, take control of both sides and move them to the center of the combat are roughly how you would expect them to be in real life. Then on the defending players combat turn switch to auto turns.
It's a bear to setup if there's a lot of ships, but it does give you an idea of what might happen for the first few turns. You don't get a full 30 rounds of combat though since you burn a few getting the ships in position.
