You can check an individual ship's status while in a fleet by right-clicking on it...

What I'd like to see is some way to permanently set the formation leader while we select the default strategy... It seems to always choose my repair frigate instead of my brand new, big gunned Flagship... It just ruins the formation if we change at the start of a battle...
