Have you been playing the game before OK, and this has just started to happen?.

This is not a known bug, and as has been noted, it is such a basic function of the game that it would have been reported by nearly everyone.

from your DXDIAG results:

Sound Tab 1: DirectSound test results: Failure at step 10 (Secondary buffer): HRESULT = 0x80004005 (Generic failure)
Music Tab: DirectMusic test results: Failure at step 6 (Activating the IDirectMusicPort): HRESULT = 0x8007000e (Out of memory)

Is saying that you have sound card problems.

- Turn the mouse click off in the Game Options programme.
- turn both sound options OFF in the preferences screen.

If your problem then goes away, you have definately got a sound problem (whether a goosed card, drivers, or a bad CODEC you will need to determine by examining your system).

The other possibility, if you have been able to play for a while, and from the out of memory error reported, may well be a RAM error of some sort (either general RAM, or sound card RAM).
