Gifting Planets??

My partner and I in one game were considering gifting one another some planets. The reason for this is i have hydrogen as my racial atmosphere ane he has oxygen. So we figured by gifting the planets to one another they'd be more useful as each of us could build more facilities on the other planet. True?

The question that comes to mind though is whether the planets will become "un-domed".. or do we need to shuttle population to them first? Or what would be involved in getting to where i obviously want to be (a planet where i can build a lot more facilities on it). Is this even a good idea?
