Default Drowning specifics

I was wondering at what specific time during the turn it was checked if units would drown. More specifically:

* If you have a unit able to breathe through an item, and you remove that item during your turn, and give said unit orders to move (or teleport) out of the sea, will he/they arrive on land safely, or will he drown? (provided nothing happens to stop his movement obviously)

* If a commander giving his squad the ability to breathe underwater (through an item or special ability) is killed in battle/through an assessination spell, will the troops in his squad drown before you have the opportunity to assign them to another available leader in the same province during your next turn?

My instinct would be that the check was made somewhere towards the end of the turn, meaning the answer to both question would be yes, but I'm not quite sure.
