Essentially, a unit can see up to a number of hexes equal to:

- the visibility rating of the map OR
- the vision rating of the unit

whichever is higher.

You can only do spotting and direct fire at enemy in hexes you can see (you can still do the Z-fire against hexes you cannot see) and indirect fire tends to be more accurate if the spotter can see the target hex.

Low visibility (5 or below) tends to mean that infantry firefights tend to be quite deadly, due to happening at pretty close ranges, if both sides are relying on unaided vision.
