Modding - Gold vs. Standard

Does anyone know what differences there are between the Regular and Gold Versions of the Data text files? Are they written differently, or did they just add some new lines, or what?

My problem is this: I am working on a mod which will include changes in at least technology and components. I have the standard 1.49 Version; it may be some time before I get SE4-Gold. I want to know what modifications I make now will be useless when I finally get Gold.
