Re: Promotions -> Non-Coms do all the Work -> Space is the Navy\'s -> No it\'s not -> etc.
No hard feelings here, hopefully none anywhere.
Hey, it's my first day on these Boards, I thought it would take at least a week to annoy somebody =) A new record! lol

Maybe the Air Force will be sucked into another branch; after all, it came in large part from the Army. Maybe just atmosphere-based craft--I don't know how practical fighter-sized craft are that would function well in both space and atmosphere.

Don't you people watch Stargate? The Air Force is out there, killing aliens and saving the earth! You can't disband the Air Force!

I never considered that before. What IS the Airforce doing exploring other planets. they should give the job to the Army or the Marines.

As it has already been said, space is the "jurisdiction" of the Air Force. It seems fairly obvious to me that since other planets are in space, the Air Force would be the ones to operate there
BTW, I have several friends in AFROTC. I'm slightly biased

I thought the US Space Command was in charge of outer space? Of course, that could be part of the Air Force, for all I know.

Stargate and other scifi not withstanding I think it highly unlikely that once we start exploring and working in space on a regular basis it will be handled by any of the terrestrial service branches. Most of it will be handled by NASA, and other research organizations, or by private sector corporations. If for some reason a dedicated military presence becomes neccesay in space, it will likely be an entirely new military branch. Just like the Air Force was originally a branch of the Army until it got large enough, at some point a new service would be formed.
