Righto, you cannot go from pre-gold to gold in the middle of a game. You can, however, go from Gold 1.67 to gold 1.78 in the middle of the game no problem.
But the reason you cannot go from pre-gold to gold is because there are alot of hard code changes made to the game, too many in fact to allow this to be done. Sorry.
