Well my responses aren't unique, but here they come...
Light Cruiser - Defense bonus + first hull that gains access to the large mount
Battleship - Decent mobility + first hull to gain access to a huge mount
While we're on the topic of ship sizes, I have to ask... Is there any reason to use cruisers? I can't seem to find a use for em mainly
Light Cruisers and Battle Cruisers, with Battleships as a close third.
LCs because they can carry Large mount and are pretty easy to get, BCs because they're the biggest ship that can hit speed 12, BBs for the heavy mount.

I must agree with Shoujo, I like Light Cruisers for their 10% defense bonus plus they are at max sped whereas Battlecruisers have Huge Mount available and are still at max speed. Cruisers are decent but if you're gonna get a bigger ship without a defense bonus then why not a BC. I like using mixed fleets of DS, LC, CR and BC in long games as each ship can be carefully customised for the role I want it to play in a battle.
This is true but they cannot attack as many times when set to "seek after X" and then to "repeat orders". One assault can sometimes make the difference between victory and fefeat.
Mine Imperator Fyron, in early-mid game is battlecruiser,Fast, multipurpose weapons, once this happens, theres No AI empire that can stop me.
In late game the Battleship ,Good mount, good speed,Overall, Just fits my profile over- all needs.
