Early game, I like the destoyers: I can get them reasonably fast and they seem like a nice size.

Late game, I like Cruisers, because a Ship Yard can fit on them.

From what I've seen on this topic, I'm probably going to be really screwed once I start playing PBW. I don't even have the ship mounts memorized, and my mind seems to be more on economics than warfare. *shrug* oh, well, i can still learn

I'm with Pax on this one;

In the early game, I chose Frigate. Why? It's a nice, small, fast ship -- and I can simply add a CSM (or similar) to my initial scout design.
I can also add a Remote Sat to the hull. So I like it alot early!

In the early game I use the biggest hull size I have researched. Light cruisers and Battle Cruisers seem the best of these, though, for the reasons already mentioned.

In the late game I like Battleships - for the same reasons everyone else does. The bigger sizes are just too slow - mobility is often a key to victory.

LC's for the Large Mount and +10 defense, BB's for the Heavy Mount and they're only 1 unit slower than ES-BC, but sometimes I'll use Baseships just because they get Massive Mount!

BattleMoons!
Sure, even using warppoint openers and closers, the thing is slower than most ships, and it takes 25 combat turns just to close to within range of a planet, but its just so big!

Until the point where I can refit my fleet with battlemoons, Dreads for power mixed in with BCs for run and smash operations.

Early game, no doubt LC is best. Combination of 10% defensive bonus, first weapon size jump, and CHEAP to build.

I hear a lot about BC's (and I see a lot) but I have never liked them. If you're playing against me, you'll see them only because I'm building a few while working on BB tech. After I get BB tech, you'll hardly see one built again.
