I'd never seen the episode mentioned, though I'd heard a good bit about it. It looks like the original is a bit scrawnier. Good catch indeed. I wonder if it was legitimate parallel inspiration, or just that he forgot do give credit.

Got a silly question, but intellectual property rights is not my strong point.

Then at the bottom it has some language attempting to, I suppose, limit it's distribution:
(All rights to this shipset are reserved by their owner.
i.e.: you can't use these images unless you have the express permission of the creator(s).)

My question to all who have downloaded these types of shipsets is Do you contact the owner b/f you download or shoot him an email thanking him or just not bother? Or, as is my suspicion, is this attempted licensing aimed at those looking to make and distrubute widespread a Race of their own creation and not at those simply wanting to use it in their own little games?

Silly questions but what the hey...

and as always, any help would be appreciated.

I think the intent is that you cannot put his shipset on your site and claim it's yours. You aren't even supposed to put it on your site without asking him first. But you can download it and play with it without asking first. Though a thank you would, of course, be appreciated.

Also if you are using it for ladder type competition it might be frowned on especially if the creator of the shipset was also in that ladder or rolepay group. In big multiplayer games you might want to make sure one of the opponents wasn't the creator of the race before you start the game (in case you don't know the opponents well). They might have something to say about that also . So far as far as I know no one that would limit single player use of their shipsets has made it available to download. Why would they make it availiable if they didn't want it to be used?

But its always nice if you like the shipset to drop them an E-mail to say so.
