Strategic benefit? Placing it as far from warppoints as possible will help slow down enemy sun-busters. (A system near the edge of the map may have all WPs on one side)
Alternatively, you could place the star on a warppoint, eventually generating a ringworld to use as warppoint defense

Probably easier to just move the warppoints around the star instead.

You may also want to place the star on an asteroid field, so that you get a sphereworld with a planet and/or moons.
That type of situation is good for training facilities.
It would also allow your planet to defend against sunbusters with the full benefits of spaceyard and huge cargo space for fighters and such.

And you could build the sphereworld components using the faster planetary yards rather than ship shipyards..

SJ and Phoenix-D, thanks for the very creative suggestions.

I'm curious about the asteroid belt idea. If I build a sun on one, do I automatically get moons? Or do I need to do some kind of planet creation? I've never done stellar manipulation before, so I have no idea what the possibilities are.

You'd need to use a planet creator to make a planet out of the asteroid belt. You can get the capability to make those well before you get ringworlds or sphereworlds.

Thanks Phoenix-D. This game is max tech, so I already have the required components for planet building. I'll have to do some experimenting...

You can still get planet makers a lot faster, because ring and sphereworld components are so expensive.
