... it seems every other patch the size of the ship displayed in the preview when you create your race goes up by a hull size or so? I swear, wasn't it originally like a light cruiser or something, and now it's a dreadnought???

Yhe ship is always Battlecruiser. In Demo it is Cruiser. I think. Or may be not
