Re: any of you ever tried..
well, she learned not only to keep her little toys from sliding under the stove and fridge, but to look under there for new and lost ones. that's abstract thinking, isn't it?

Re: any of you ever tried..
I have taught more than one cat to play fetch. All of them will do it
when they want to.
A dog does it because it wants to please you.
Dogs think of you as the pack leader.
Cats think of you as their mother.

Re: any of you ever tried..
When I lived with my parents we had 2 cats. Now I live with my girlfriend and we have a rabbit named Snuff.
He is utterly fearless, perpetually active, impervious to discipline, unreasonably cute and quite the most destructive pet I could ever have imagined. I guess it's my own fault for naming him after a punk band...
Everything that he can reach is a target for chewing and/ or digging activity: wires, furniture, rugs, walls, shoes, people, laundry, paperwork, curtains, laptops, doors, houseplants (especially the houseplants), mobile phones... He's only about 9 inches tall when he stands upright so you'd think you could just put stuff out of reach, except now he's big enough to jump and/or climb onto just about any surface in my home. I swear he runs up walls when we're not looking like some kind of lop-eared spiderman. Oh, and he's nowhere near his full size and destructive capacity yet, being only 4 months old.
And I haven't even mentioned the little poo-pellets I keep finding on the floor, in the bed, under the sofa-cushions, in my laptop, in my trouser pockets (how..?), in my filing cabinet and just about anywhere else. Still, it's good fertiliser for what's left of the houseplants.
If anyone's interested I'll post some pictures later.
So I've decided the pet I really want is one of those Sony robot-dog things. Clean, obedient and cute. Perfect. Shame they cost about 1500 quid. Maybe I could get the rabbit chrome-plated...

Does he have red eyes and sharp pointy teeth?

Re: any of you ever tried..
Not meaning to offend you cat lovers... but...
Invite a cat into your life.
Especially if you want to introduce yet another openly defiant creature that has no sense whatsoever as to the order of things... Ingracious and ornery. Your home is the one place you should at least try and introduce some hint of functional order. If you are comfortable taking orders from a cat, by all means, get one.
I mean... the nerve... the cat I grew up with was satan incarnate. It would tolerate you petting it... get bored... and maul you on a whim. Yep, that's great! When a dog does that, you put it to sleep. Cats are great around babies too- NOT.
Just saying I'm not a cat person. I'm highly allergic to them anyway, so that doesn't help. I have actually met some very excellent cats, but they are quite rare.
Interesting too- undomesticated cats model the behavior of lions. Male cats will slaughter the entire litters of foreign cats when detected and "conquer" the females. Not the cute little kitty at all...
Not that cats have all bad qualities... I'm sure they are delicious.

Re: any of you ever tried..
OK, sorry to turn this into a "here are some pictures of my pet" thread, but here are some pictures of my pet:
Now how cute is that? Wouldn't you forgive him for eating your best boots then taking a dump on the remains? I have to. Regularly.
