nothing else bright south, though. unless the houses are blocking my view.

Quite possible- it was really low to the horizon when I saw it.

Re: Close Encounter with Mars
I saw it, but I wasn't really expecting too. I thought this was all pretty much hype, but it really was bright. Much brighter then I am used to seeing things in the sky. So bright that at first I thought it was a plane until I looked again and it hadn't moved.

Re: Close Encounter with Mars
I saw it.
Fortunately, the sky is clear tonight. I first saw Mars when I was driving, and I looked at the sky over to the east and bit to the south. It's so bright that I could see it even with all the lights from the street and the buildings. I couldn't see any stars because of all the city lights, but Mars is so bright that I still couldn't miss it.
Then I went to the park, which is a bit darker, so that I could have a better look. It's definitely very bright, and it does have a reddish color to it. It's much brighter than any of the stars. But all I could see is a glowing point of light, because I don't have a telescope.

Re: Close Encounter with Mars
Well, about half an hour until closest approach (if my math is corect), and even with all the lights in my apartment complex Mars is still pretty darn bright. I guess it's because of those lights, but Mars has more of a peach-orange color when I looked at it a few minutes ago.
I just wish I still had my old telescope...
