If you haven't checked any mods, you could try TDM, which is the vanilla game with much improved AI, Devnull Mod, which also improves the AI but tweaks the game, or the AIC mod, designed to provide a challenging AI. (All three can be found in quite a few places)

As for PBW, I believe you were merely unfortunate. You should have been accepted in a game looking for players without too much problem. I can only advise you to try again, or to be on the lookout for any new game, or perhaps even to try the King of the Hill League if you like more competitive games and are feeling courageous enough. Or likewise, you might give a try to the Rating System .
