fortunatly, the cost is prohibitive and will be for a while. but once it's not, they will try it.

Life imitates fiction...
In the Red Dwarf books, the crew find Kryten aboard a ship called the Nova 5. The Nova 5's mission was to send a load of stars into carefully-synchronised premature supernovae to spell out the words "COKE ADDS LIFE" in the sky.
THen of course there's Chairface Chippendale from the TICK comics, who manages to carve the letters "CHA" into the surface of the moon before he was thwarted...

in one of the gi-joe cartoons, the evil guy uses a giant laser to carve his face into the moon. but, like everything in that cartoon, it only Lasted an episode.
