Re: Slynky v Joachim Ratings bash
See Slynky, you are gambling as well to make a quick run for Warp Openers. I am not the only wildcard here. (Well, it also depends on how early you gained it, and with how many research points behind you)
Now, we shall see if that tactics works fine when properly used.

The Hero of Silesia Medal goes to every sailor aboard Yabby V 003 for a daring and potentially Empire saving attack. They bravely flew out of their hiding hole in an ion storm and attacked a lone enemy light cruiser, suspected of being an accursed warp opener. In blatant disregard for the 60 other enemy ships in the system they destroyed one of the greatest threats to the Empire. Three cheers to the crew of Yabby V 003... Hurrah, Hurrah, HURRAH!
And I note that you do have ice col as well now.
I think this might be one of those games of who can cause enough riots first! So Slynky do you have UPCs and troops as well????

I would nominate Yabby V for the "Biggest Payoff From Patient Hiding" in any game I've played in. Good gamble and great payoff!
Anyone who plays routinely with me knows I'm big on UPCs...a priority somewhere around Sensor/ECM 2s...so they are everywhere. And when you broke through the hole, I started building various defenses on all planets in the vicinity.
Yeah, I realized the difference between our races in warfare but missing about half my shots when beside the target , I was a bit shocked! And I won't even discuss firing from a distance.
And around 100 shots from sats resulted in about 10 hits or so. Ugh!
I suppose, since 1st through 3rd in the tourney has been decided, there isn't much interest in our game...'cept for us .

Might be too little too late. He has a fleet of 25 ships, most battleships, in a critical spot. With all the whacking he has done to my ships, some of those boys must be around 30% ship trained by now . And with the quirks of the game, who can tell about how the fleet looks.
But, as I said, very exciting game on a map that Joachim said was a bit boring because of the Balance Mod. I suspect he finds it a bit more interesting now .

Re: Slynky v Joachim Ratings bash
Well, Turn 88 it is, and my empire is tetering on the edge of oblivion...
I have managed to catch and destroy all but one of the old set of raider fleets Slynky sent through with his openers. The Last one is now bottled in an already dead system. Unfortunately he has just pushed another through in a different spot.
THe massive damage - must have been at least 50 colonies that he glassed or I abandoned - lead to uncontrollable rioting and at one point a -300 000 min debt. This occured just as my own 4 open/close ships appeared - if only 5 turns earlier .
I am now returning to positive mins but it may be too late. I have a few tricks left but it will depend on what happens in a few turns.
I am wondering now given the similarity in speeds whether I should have bothered to chase the raider fleets at all. In retrospect they might have been better joining the counter attack and having a race between us both. What are other's experience of this dilema?
I was far too defensive and reactionary in this game and have been tail chasing for the Last 20 turns - at least I have learnt a lot from this one, and it not even over yet!

Re: Slynky v Joachim Ratings bash
Well, in my experience with raiders it isn't cost-effecive to chase them. I tied Geo down for a LONG time that way.
build weapon platforms instead. Raiding fleets genneraly don't have enough oomp to get past a decent set of platforms, and you free up your mobile forces for attacking.

Re: Slynky v Joachim Ratings bash
Year: 2409.4 - Joachim surrenders
For many many turns, Joachim's fleets readily outdid mine so I turned to a way to get past him--Stellar Manip. I worried it would be too late but it seemed he was being cautious. I had already seen he was fielding battleships while I had LCs. . Even without bats, and not too big of a racial difference in fighting, I was getting pasted pretty well. When I lost a fleet trained at 20% and ships at various levels of training, I knew there was only one way out.
I didn't say so back at the other Messages but, if you can believe it, my first opener off the line (100 sectors) couldn't reach from ANY of my colonies accross space to any of his systems! I thought that was the end as I then needed to get the next level (200 sectors) and I never had more than 155k in research the whole game till the Last 3 turns.
I think I was ready to counter any "Riot Run" you may have put together, Joachim. When your "Hail Mary" crushed my defensive point, I shifted my the forward third of my empire to getting ready for it. What was on my side was you had no panels and I did. So, I started putting mines over every planet...I knew you could sweep 100 with the fleet you had but this would keep it from breaking up and spreading out. Second, I built the heck out of platforms. The critical places had, when I stopped, about 5 or 6 small platforms and 3 or 4 medium platforms. Engine killers, etc. I was going to make it as painful as possible for you to run around. Even the 3 fac places had 1 long-reaching medium platform on them. Thirdly, I put troops on just about any planet that wasn't doing something. Only 2 planets ever rioted...and that was in the system you sat in for a while.
One of the good things about the Balance Mod and getting stellar manip...I started building Monolith facs in all the places in the rear. At the end of the game, I had around 1.4 million minerals and about 300k in rads and orgs. As the surrender came around, I had 55 dreadnoughts at various levels of completion (and about 20 other kinds of support ships). That and about 400 ships in service.
You played a heck of a game! A thrill ride...coming close the the most thrilling game I ever played, the one where each of us (MarkW and I) had openers and closers and were ripping each other up. And, as usual, you must have expanded and handled your empire much better than I did as I was second most of the time up till I had spent several turns in your "back country" after opening holes.
My hat off to you, sir !
