Default How To Set Formation Leader?

How is the formation leader set? I was reading that the formation doesn't take affect unless a leader is designated. TIA

Select the ship you want to lead the formation and press Alt-# (#= group to lead). To add ships to the formation select and press Ctrl-#. I've had some problems with doing this manually, though. Sometimes all the ships in the formation will try to move to the edges of the map no matter where the leader goes, and other times they leave gaps in the formation. I think formations are a great feature with some serious potential, but like most of SE4 *cough* AI *cough*, it needs to be refined.

Some ships will head for the edges, regardless of formation. Their absence will leave gaps. You can change this in the Ship Design screen by changing the default strategy for the design from "Don't Get Hurt." This strategy defaults for each class as defined in the Strategy sub-menu of the Empire section.

Generally speaking, ships with little or no wheapons will flee the battle. So will carriers.

You needn't use the hotkeys - there's the "Orders" menu;
- first remove all formation-settings, than start with the leader unit and add all others - at least this is the theory.

Found it not working repeatedly ...

Yeah but these are all attack ships, like cruiser and destroyers and such. They certainly shouldn't be fleeing.

You'll be able to select the fleet leader in strategic mode in the upcoming patch. Just click on the ship you want in the fleet list window, and "Fleet Leader" will appear next to it.
