Another problem is working out what research they have available. Their colonization tech is known from their information panel. To find out anything else you need to fight their ships or spy on them first. Therefore if you maintain peacefull trading relationship from first contact then trading tech is a miss and miss exercise.
I would suggest that if you have a treaty with them you should over time get to know what tech they have. Then you could trade sensibly for it.
