I would echo the sentiments of being patient. The beta testers have been playing this for months and we have seen the vast improvement in the game during that time. I truly believe that you have not seen anything yet. And if the AI isn't enough of a challenge, play it multiplayer. I find that much harder than the AI, regardless of how good the AI is.
Also, as noted before, using the strategic combat option evens the odds out greatly. I think the AI is configured for that and gets its best performance in that mode.
