Help, need "Dummy" guide to modding
We have the full Version, and we look forward to the opportunity to create some mods.
That said, we have read the mod user manuals included with the game. Now, that being said, could I please have someone explain in ENGLISH how to mod.
Our eyes glazed over while reading the manuals, which I am sure are great, if you know or have some preexsisting experience with modding.
We have none.
We are still at a loss on how to make a map, let alone set up DO to have some kind of tile editor in game (the mod manual makes refrence to inserting some "-tilegen" somewhere, but I have yet to find the magic spot that makes this happen)
We try to use the included editors- that let you select the tile pieces, but I fail to see how to take that to the next step.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE could someone simply give a step by step instruction on how to make a map, change the map, add monsters, add items, etc?
How hard would it be to just make a program that allows you to "paint" the maps, or setions of maps, in the game (think of it like a map editor from some civ games)?
I have yet to figure out how to make a "15 by 15" square since all I can seem to do is make single squares in an editor that are layered.
In a word, HELP.
please.
thanks.

Create a new sortcut to the DO .exe file. Right click on the shortcut, and select properties. Under the program tab, add the "-tilegen" to the end of the command line.

You make tiles so that the tiles may be randomly placed durring map creation when you start the module.

Re: Help, need "Dummy" guide to modding
I created a shortcut and tried adding that
-tilegen, it didn't work. What a, I doing wrong?
I see no place that says "command line"- what is a command line?
There is a "target" line which contains the location of the exe file. I try adding the -tilegen to that, and it says that no such target exsists..
Help!

You need a space between the end of the file name and the -tilegen

Re: Help, need "Dummy" guide to modding
is anyone having any luck with modding yet, and specifically i mean with the -tilegen utility, I can use it, but can't seem to get it to actually save the tile I worked on? is anyone having better luck with it, and if so, what exactly are you doing to get it to save?

Re: Help, need "Dummy" guide to modding
dummy, there is also the good old fashioned way of going to the DOS and typing 'dungody -tilegen'.
Ahmo, yes, I have created quite a few tiles. If you hit the save button, the tile will be saved as 'tile1' in the main directory of DO. You can than copy and paste it to one of the xxxx_tiles files in your module folder. You still need to take care of connections, chance to be placed, etc. Also look out for the terrain that monsters are placed on. The default is 'floor, gravel, plain' (IIRC), which might not be true for your new tile.
Hope that helps,
Rollo

Re: Help, need "Dummy" guide to modding
Thanks, I got it finally!
For those who run into my problem, insert -tilegen OUTSIDE the brackets in the target line. It should look like this:
"C:\Program Files\Shrapnel Games\Malfador Machinations\Dungeon Odyssey\DungOdy.exe" -tilegen
Do the same exact thing for the -mapgen
I made the mistake of trying to include -tilegen inside the brackets...

Re: Help, need "Dummy" guide to modding
Excellent, thank you Rollo, exactly what I needed. Just checked my main D.O. directory and I had about 54 tile files. Now to start connecting...
