Yeah, I do this all the time. There are some things I just NEVER research 'cause of this. For instance, I NEVER research other colonizing techs - it's too easy to trade ships and I'd much rather use the half mil R-points towards weapons and Intell....

I know people who deliberately mispronounce that as "VOY-luh". It might have been someone like that who named North Versailles, Pennsylvania. (pronounced "ver-SAYLS")

Basically, its an exploit of the AI.
I still trade ships with the AI, but I make sure its a fair trade. A fancy repair/resupply ship, or a warship that I can't afford to maintain anymore.
