Take a look at the EA research file. They research Ship Capture *after* they research Ice Planet Colonization. In fact, as ironic as it may sound, the two entries come exactly one after the other in the Version of the ModPack I have installed on this computer. :-)
I'm guessing that even if the AI captured a ship it would not be smart enough to analyze it for the technology anyways.
BTW, the AI did once acquire one of my SM ships through an Intel Op. It was one heck of an expensive ship. Thank goodness I don't put shields on my SM ships. It was very easy to board and get back.

Re: Does AI use boarding ships
As to the Borg boarding, that was me. Happened and surprised the crap out of me. . Never saw it happen again (in tactical, but it did happen it strat a few times again.) It was an old Borg race off of 'House of Style' I think. They used cap. Missiles and Trac beams with boarding parties/security on every ship. Never did well in the stat's section since the TONNES of pdc that was soon employed by the TDM packs but still a beautiful set.

Re: Does AI use boarding ships
Early on in my first game, one of the races, I forget now which it was, took one of mine. A newbie, it took me a turn or two in tactical combat to figure out why my own ship was firing on me.
I still see it from time to time in the far reaches of the galaxy. I was pissed it happened, but now, eons later, I sort of hope it's still out there, even though it was built early on and probably has low level shielding. If it comes to it, I doubt if I will have the stomach to bLast it to pieces.

Re: Does AI use boarding ships
In a few of my previous games, the AI(don't remember which races) used the ship capture module on every one of their 'capital' ships. I have lost a good number of my ships that way, until I brought my tech up.

Re: Does AI use boarding ships
The Cue Cappa are pretty good at ship capture, but that's because one of the main Psychic weapons is a crew converter. Their fleets almost always have a few ships from other races mixed in with Cue ships... but I don't know if they analyze them for tech. That would be pretty cool, though.

Re: Does AI use boarding ships
They are very good at using the converter, they have a dozen or so of my ships in my current game.
Do you think Psychic races should be immune to the Alligience Converter?
Shouldn't they also get a defensive bonus in combat? I mean can't they see the shots coming

Maybe... although the Temporal races should get a similar bonus in that case. Of course, the Temporal races get a facility that provides a combat bonus for that very reason; I don't know if Psychic races do. Maybe the argument is that the systems required to allow ships to move out of the way of weapons fire just can't be mounted in a ship, nor can the beings controlling the ship react fast enough to do something about incoming weapons fire.
Too bad the defense bonuses don't work against seekers...
