In Doms 1 immortals healed their afflictions naturally, like most Pangaea units. "Suiciding" them wasn't needed, although it could speed up the recovery. Maybe this has changed in Doms 2? No, they still heal over time. I do not remember if it is at the same rate it was in dom 1 though. Also, the faery queen is less adept at healing than the priestess is, so to get rid of a annoying affliction on a pretender or similar you might have to wait for quite some time.

I've had units with diseases and/or other afflections travel with a witch. After 7 turns the units only got worse. So I am quite sure witches do not heal battle afflections... only units low on hitpoints.

Yep, immortals do heal up slowly. My Bog Mummy had been crippled by the Mute affliction, so was as good as useless until I got it "fixed" for him.
I'm pretty sure witches can't heal, although it'd be a nice addition.
