In SP, yes, supercombatants are abusable against the AI if you feel like cheapening your enjoyment. I prefer rainbow mages for magical fun.
And I don't know how much you're forced to use supercombatants in mp...they all get countered pretty easily unless you go into a LOT of trouble getting them set up perfectly. The early expansion they offer on high indy settings is nice, but on lower indy settings I don't know they're even worth the cost for the most part.
