The only time I was able to stop them was when I pushed for big blood summons that can hold a province alone against a sizeable army. They were rolling me back from all sides until I started to field a sufficient number of ice devils and archdevils, and got my cyclops pretender involved as well. Breath of winter and quickness with ice devils, fire shield and heat from hell with archdevils, and blade winds from cyclops finally helped me to stand ground, and later push forward. Definitely not the only strategy that will work, but one of them.
