Default I think my mage found a site he shouldnt have?

I set my Master Engineer to search for magic sites, and he got one which also had death gems. How can that be? Or is it the fact that mages find sites in general, and if they find one which has two types (say fire and death) and they only know fire, they find the entire site?

Actually, are there any prerequisites for finding those "recruiting" sites (like where you can recruit a witch or other neat casters)?

thanks

A site with requirement of fire to be found can produce both death and fire gems. The requirements for finding a site don't always reflect the type of gems the site produces.

Each type of magic site has a required skill level to find it, which ranges from 1 to 4 in a single magic path. If your mage has the required skill, then you will find that site.

A complete list of magic sites, their effects, and the requirements to find them can be found at:

Master *Smith* or Seige Engineer? The former is a mage who can find Earth and Fire sites. Some Earth or Fire sites also give you death gems. You can tell what kind of site it is by the icon of the site.

A Seige Engineer is not a mage and shouldn't find any site at all, as far as I know...

I don't have Excel to read the information at the link below, but can you tell me if there is a general rule about success in searches?

Do you need a mage with Fire 1 to find sites that give 1 fire gem per turn? Fire 2 to find sites that give 2 fire gems, etc or is there a more exponential growth to that series? Like, Fire 2 gets you sites that give 1 gem, Fire 4 for 2 gems or less, Fire 5 for 3 gems or less, Fire 8 for 4 gems or less, etc?

I just think it's a waste to use my Pretender God as the searcher since he's the only caster I can get that has 8 or more in one magic school. If I send out a caster with Fire 3 to search all my provinces, what sites will he miss??

[edit: I found this info in the stickied newbie post in the forum
Quote:
How do I find magic sites? There are magic sites in all magic paths, plus holy and unholy. These are usually hidden, and each has a level of magic that must be met in order to be found. So, any mage or priest can search, and if a site can be seen by the commander, it will be revealed on the first try. Some players make a "Rainbow Mage" pretender with level 2 or 3 in every path (except holy and unholy) and use him just for searching. Important things to note: Once a site is found, it is found forever, and if the province is captured, the site will be usable by the enemy without having to search. As far as anyone knows, there is a limit of 4 magic sites per province, and it is never necessary to search in the capitol. Around 95% of the sites are level 3 or lower, but every path has at least one level 4 site. There are no sites that require searching above level 4. Magic sites that produce gems send them straight to your lab (you do not need to build a lab in these provinces). Sites that let you recruit special mages require a lab for the mage to be recruited, as do sites that give forge bonuses, summoning bonuses, and other lab-related actions.
But it's not toally clear to me. Is a level 4 a site that can be found by only someone with 4 or more in a specific Magic School, or is it just a site that has a harder % chance of being uncovered? Does this info mean a mage with 4 fire will find every single fire site possible? Still confused

There is a freeware excel viewer on the internet, do a Google search for "Excel Viewer" in order to obtain it.

In general the stronger the site the higher requirement.

The maximum path required for finding a site is 4. So you don't 'need' to use you high magic pretender to search.

A level 4 fire mage will find every possible fire site. So will a level 2 fire mage casting Augury (Thaumaturgy 2).

It's not just the gem income that's important, remember. High-level, rare sites don't necessary provide oodles of gems, but may allow recruitment of interesting troops (ethereal knights, ethereal assassins, powerful mages, etc), or even free summons (mostly undead and devils), or other services (boosting experience, scrying) or bonuses (20% discounts on Conjuration, Construction, etc). Spiffy stuff out there if you're lucky.
Oh, and try not to get addicted to Acashic Record. It's expensive to cast...
