Map Display?
I only have the Demo at the moment tried a couple of game but, the main map display does not show leader or armies. To find your leader you have to click on the province to see if any one is there is this correct, or have I missed something.
It just seems to make it harder than it needs to be to keep track of your forces.
Quite like what I’ve seen so far, although I don’t understand a great deal!
Help appreciated.

Welcome to the club.
I play Dominions I since the week it came out, and I still don't understand everything - which is not due to lack of trying.
Anyway, it's a beautiful gem of game, and you'll quickly get used to the blue boxes - especially later in game, you usually know where you send your troop of combat mages.

Re: Map Display?
Also, try pressing F1. It has a big lists of all provinces you own or have troops in (if they are stealthy), and shows all commanders. Or all except researchers if you press Tabulator. Also, you can
see and adjust the tax rates (not needed except if you are short in money and have to quickly get more, remember that it kills people and causes unrest; lowering it lowers unrest but does NOT raise population),
see unrest and react accoringly (too high taxes, negative dominion, enemy spy instilling unrest and/or magic site, normally death or blood),
check have you forgotten to search for magic sites (the Citadels don't have any unfound sites, but you can find them from all other provinces. Max in any province is four, and quite often there are none. Because there also are eight paths, don't wonder if you don't find any sites. Try with different mages. Level 4 is enough to find even the most powerful, very rare sites.)
There might be more, but that's off the hand. Pressing 'N' cycles through the commanders without orders.

Re: Map Display?
Characters don't show up on the map as icons, but the map does provide some limited data on the size and composition of your army.
If a province has a force in it, a blue box will appear near the base of the banner.
The larger the force, the larger the box.
If one or more leader/characters is in the province, the box will have an "X" in it, automatically leading many of us to think "infantry".
Right-clicking on the province will then display the leaders along the left-hand side as normal.
