Elemental magic: fire, air, water, earth
Sorcery: astral, death, nature, blood
Priestly powers: holy, unholy (can't get both at the same time)

IIRC, you get bonuses to STR and ??? (I forgot it).

You mean Picus' axe and Procas' axe? The Axes of Evil! No, I don't know. However it sounds like they get added strength, added protection, a fear/awe effect of some sort, and maybe something else that affects population, in addition to -4 defense, dual-weapon penalties if not ambidextrous, and four axe attacks per turn.

Re: two short questions on magic items
For those who would download the Magic Item Reference v2.5 (cough cough) at:
http://www.illwinter.com/dom2/docs.html
When using the Axes together you get +5 Str, +2 MR, Cause Fear (+5).
Each axe has 2 attacks, on hit armloss (Cause Affliction: Lost an Arm).

Re: two short questions on magic items
Thank you.
Now that you mention it, can someone explain how the (+X) Ratings in things such as Fear (+4) or Awe (-2) -- these numbers (+ or - X) refer to what?
thanks

Re: two short questions on magic items
the bonus dont means the same thing. For awe, its a modifier to the morale roll of the attacking unit (failed : wont attack), whereas for fear, it modify the area of effect of the fear effect, and the saving throw, but a +5 fear wont cause a -5 modifier to the saving throw, there is a correspondance table somewhere, in the bowels of dominions code.
There was a thread on fear effects, perhaps a search can give you more details.

Re: two short questions on magic items
OMG - limb loss! 4 x limb loss per turn? I better keep my 4-armed crossbreeds away from whoever has those axes!
