Sprite List / Sprite Extractor
Ok, I have a question regarding modding... When creating new monsters etc, apparently you can't just use a sprite already in the game for the unit - Is there a way to extract the damn things? I want to simply use some army pictures that are already in the game, without simply modifying the existing unit that has it to suit my needs..

Re: Sprite List / Sprite Extractor
No extractor yet. There is a scenario map called UnitView available at http://www.freewebs.com/sunray_dom2/
If you make a game with that as Pythium and any 1 AI then you can open the game to find that Pythium has all of the units in the game assigned to it.
You can grab the image of any of those by using the Print-Screen button and pasting the image into a paint program.

Re: Sprite List / Sprite Extractor
Not very handy, that. It will work, but requires a good deal of editing yet to get the image to look properly.
Gandalf: You said 'yet', does that mean you think there might be someone working on something like that?

Re: Sprite List / Sprite Extractor
Hrmmm. I hadn't actually thought of that.
*sigh*
Way too much hassle though I think.. Probably be best to just wait until either they release some method of doing this - or someone else engineers one.
Kind of sloppy really Finally adding support for modding units / sides etc, but not giving them access to the sprites already there...

Well I dont think they should have held up modding for that. There is a way, just not an easy one.
And I dont know if one will ever exist. I tend to talk very diplomatically. Another option (and probably easier) would be for a mod command that allows a sprite to be used. I havent played with the mod stuff yet (still having too much fun with all the map commands)

Re: Sprite List / Sprite Extractor
That would work perfectly I think. Of course then some list would need to be made avail...
Hehe, I'm not much of a mapper myself.
I enjoy modding, adding races etc, and seeing how far I can twist the game into something new and refreshing. =)
EDIT: Actually you know, thinking about that some more - I think I would much rather actually have some way of extracting the sprites. I mean I might want some infantry unit that has a tower shield, but it might need a pike instead of a spear, or a sword instead of a morning star. Plus it would be really handy to even just be able to change the colours of a unit. You can't do things even that simple with your solution.
It would at least be something though.

Re: Sprite List / Sprite Extractor
But if you are going into a paint program then I would think the Ptr-Scrn method wouldnt be too bad. Of course there are alot of ways that anything could be made easier but I think Id rather see some 3rd party take a stab at it than to have the devs do it.

Re: Sprite List / Sprite Extractor
I'm sure someone will, this community is incredibly productive. =)
I've tried the prtscrn method myself, it works, but it's a bit too much work per unit. It takes some editing and tweaking for each one. At some point it won't be a problem though!

I tried to plant the thought in another thread that some "want to help" person who cant come up with anything might use the AllUnits game and cut-n-paste the images into screenfuls. It would make a nice library for us.
