Unexpected death of the ettin.
C'tis mage VS a single archer and an ettin.
round 1: archer fires, mage raises skeleton, ettin stands there.
round 2: archer fires, mage raises skeleton, ettin stands there.
round 3: archer fires, mage raises skeleton, ettin stands there.
round 4: archer fires, mage raises skeleton, ettin stands there.
round 5: archer fires, mage raises skeleton, ettin stands there.
this keeps happening for a long time...
Finally the archer is killed, ettin makes a morale check and fails, ettin runs while getting attacked by skeletons.
Ettin is down to 63 health, no skeletons can keep up with him as he runs too fast.
He still has 63 health... he's running... My mage has fainted, he ain't doing anything...
As soon as the ettin runs into the end of the field, he dies. No poison, nothing near attacking him, no enchantments, not battle enchantments, no curses, etc. My mage is fainted, didn't cast anymore skeletons, still unconcious. The ettin had 63 health before he died, no skeletons were near him...
ETC ETC ETC........ And yes, the ettin was a mercenary... he just... died...

Re: Unexpected death of the ettin.
It happens for a long time? I know that one annoying feature is that if a combat drags on forever, everyone will be auto-killed. This can happen if everyone on the battlefield becomes paralyzed or otherwise has fallen and can't get up, yet isn't dead. This is why an SC should avoid having things like heat/cold auras that cause fatigue, astral shield, and other paralysis effects.

Your Last line holds the answer. Mercenaries are always removed from the game once they rout. There are several possible interpretations of this, and I'm not sure which the devs had in mind.

Mercenaries that flees die. No matter if there are neighbouring friendly provinces or not.

That seems to be the problem, really. I wonder why he just stood there?

Re: Unexpected death of the ettin.
I've seen cases where units will 'do nothing' for one turn for no reason at all. (not fatigue or spells or whatever)
I've never seen them 'do nothing' for multiple turns.

Re: Unexpected death of the ettin.
Hey Argitoth-
Commanders without orders but who have troops with them will default to the stay behind troops orders (or spell/fire if they have that option), so maybe someone didn't assign your two headed friend any orders?
If your C'tis mage attacked them, the archer would fire, the Ettin would stay behind him and not engage, and if the archer dies the Ettin would rout. (if all troops are killed, non-immortal commanders will automatically flee even if they should be able to win).
If the Ettin is alone, even without orders he will attack, so you have to be careful to set him to attack something in the orders screen...
