Yes you can break down a ship and analyze its components and it will give you research bonuses for the technologies that the ship contains. You can't acquire racial or unique techs this way though.

Ya, it had the wrench and the station had the repair symbol...and it was my own ship design.

Didn't get a chance to try to duplicate it, and have moved on to another game. If the situation comes up i'll test the ship before the repair yard thing again.
