I was wondering what exactly the animal icon means.

I know for example that my summoned wolf is an animal but that animal icon or tag just says “this unit is an animal”.

Is it any advantages or disadvantages to an animal?

I was thinking of using some summoned wolfs as patrollers attached to a cheap commander.

There are *very* few spells that affect animals in a special way (Probably 1 or 2 spells and 1 or 2 items). So basically just ingore it and be happy you have animal friends on your side.

Animals are affected by animal awe, which some units have. It's like regular awe, but only works on animals.

AFAIK animals ain't good at patrolling.
