Clarification. I should probably mention that normal shields (not just Air Shields) do confer some benefit against missiles (perhaps based on the shield's defense stat, perhaps based on shield size (round/tower?)).

It's based on the shield's defense stat. It works like: 2d6oe > (2d6oe + shielddefense) if I remember correctly.
