Graphics for modding.

I'm dipping into my first play around with mods and I'm trying to build a new nation (or replace one of the others).

What I'm unsure of is how to alter the graphics for the troops etc, Im not a good artist when it comes to creating whole new piccies, but Im passable at altering others and aside of that there are some graphics within the game that could simply replace the ones I want to mod.

Is there any way I can get the graphics 'out' of the game to play with, i've tried poking around in the directories etc but they dont seem to be there.

Done a search on here for a few variations of modding and graphics, didnt turn up much.

Any help or advice possible is thanked greatly in advance.

P.S I was thinking of giving MP a try, do you guys just set servers up off the bat or is there a bit of a community happening that does this. I know how long a SP can take me but I have no idea of the estimated time of a MP game. Im a GMT player, but have odd days off that I could play.
